Maths at St Nicholas
At St Nicholas Church School we want all pupils to enjoy learning and exploring mathematics. Our Maths teaching centres around the three main aims of the National Curriculum. Our provision aims to ensure that all pupils:
- become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
- reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
- can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions
We teach the National Curriculum following our school overview, which provides regular repetition of key learning and also provides connections between key concepts. This provides a progression of skills for Years 1 – 6 in all of the key areas of learning –
- Number and Place Value
- Addition and Subtraction
- Multiplication and Division
- Fractions, Decimals and Percentages
- Geometry (Shape)
- Geometry (Position, Direction and Movement)
- Measure
- Statistics
- Algebra

Teachers plan lessons which help build pupils' conceptual understanding. Learning follows a Concrete, Pictoral, Abstract approach. Pupils have new concepts taught to them with the use of concrete resources. When they are ready they move to pictoral representations. Finally, when ready, they move to the abstract. This process is shown in our calculation policy. Resources are available in each classroom for pupils to access whenever they need. Teachers use a range of high quality resources, including White Rose, NCETM, Abacus, Classroom Secrets and Primary Stars (KS1) to help them teach the National Curriculum as mapped out in our school curriculum overview.
