At St Nicholas Church School we aim to create a happy, safe and secure environment, where all children enjoy learning, achieve their potential and respect and value each other as well as themselves.
We believe that all children, including those identified as having Special Educational Needs or a Disability (SEND), have an entitlement to an accessible, broad and balanced academic and social curriculum, and that they should be fully included in all aspects of school life, where and when they are able.
We are a friendly and fully inclusive school which takes account of all areas of additional need including the academic, physical, social, emotional and mental health needs of a child.
Where children have an identified special educational need, that is: if they have a learning difficulty which calls for special educational provision to be made for them, that provision will be ‘additional to and different from that which would normally be provided in the classroom’.
At St Nicholas Church School we also have a specialist provision, in the form of our Resource Base, which is designated for children who have recognised Social, Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties identified in their Education, Health and Care Plan. The role of our Resource Base is to facilitate and support inclusion into the mainstream classes. The Resource Base has a 20 place allocation and each Resource Base pupil has a place in a mainstream class and within the Resource base. The provision comprises of two classes in the resource base one for Key Stage 1, Wellow Class and the other for key stage 2, Midford Class. Our aim is to fully include Resource Base pupils with their peers within mainstream. Our Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo) at St Nicholas Church School is Mrs Helen Crossen. Helen works closely with the teachers and teaching assistants to identify those children who are in need of additional support and in ensuring that these children receive the differentiated provision and additional support they require to make good progress.
