Early Years Foundation Stage

At St. Nicholas Church School we provide children with a nurturing and enabling environment which encourages them to explore, question and express themselves with confidence and enthusiasm.  Children are given the opportunity for exploration both inside and outdoors and have free flow daily access to our vast, well resourced outdoor area.  Our 'play based' curriculum has been designed to foster creativity, curiosity and promote an inquiring mind. We use a balance of child initiated and adult led learning experiences to achieve this.

We believe in a holistic approach, underpinned by real life and sensory experiences. This helps to build purposeful connections and expand knowledge.  Communication and language skills are developed in all curriculum areas and the voice of the children is at the centre of everything that we do.

At St. Nicholas Church School every opportunity is exploited to develop independence, risk taking and to build resilience skills. We believe that the Foundation stage is the stepping stone for future learning behaviours and is  just the beginning of an exciting educational adventure.

The EYFS Curriculum

The statutory Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum has seven key areas of learning. These are broken down into 3 prime areas and 4 specific areas:

Prime areas:
  • Communication and Language
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development
These are are the fundamental building blocks and are the main focus for the first half term in reception. These prime areas continue to underpin our work throughout the Reception year, ensuring we have happy children that will thrive and succeed as they continue their learning journey.

 Specific areas:
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design
As a school we have chosen to follow 'Development Matters' as a non-statutory guide for the EY curriculum.

For an overview of the statutory and non-statutory a guidance please see the link below.

The Characteristics of Effective Learning are principles that are woven throughout the early years curriculum and set the learning behaviours for future success.

These are included also included in the resources below.
